Types of Transducers
- By Christine OKelly
- Published 09/22/2009
- Technology
A
transducer is a component that converts one type of energy to another for
information transfer. Transducers are central to the operation of many
electronic devices and can be separated into three categories.
Sensors for Measuring
A sensor is
a type of transducer that measures one form of energy and reports it in
another, usually a digital or electrical signal such as an analog voltage or
current output. The output can be run to a measuring device such as a frequency
meter or data logger to measure the incoming energy.
The
incoming signal can be from any form of energy including mechanical, magnetic,
acoustic or others. Users can make precise measurements of these energies
rather than trying to judge them subjectively. Examples of sensors include
tachometers, pH probes and photoresistors, thermocouples and transformers.
Sensors can
be used to do more than just activate a needle on a gauge. A microphone is a
sensor that converts acoustic energy into electrical signals. These signals are
transmitted or recorded and turned back into acoustic energy by an actuator.
Actuators for Action
An actuator
is a transducer that converts an input, typical electrical, into an output,
typically non-electrical. It can be used to convert input signals generated by
device controls into actions. The user pushes a button or turns a dial, and the
input is translated into concrete tasks.
A very
simple example of an actuator is a light bulb. Electrical energy is converted
to visible light. Switching the current on and off causes the same change in
the light, and current can be varied to dim or brighten the light.
A
loudspeaker or transmitter is another common example of an actuator. Electrical
signals generated by a microphone sensor are translated into acoustic energy by
a loudspeaker or radio waves by a transmitter.
Sensors and Actuators Working
Together
Often,
electrical or digital signals are intermediaries in a device and both types of
transducers are used. A microphone sensor and a loudspeaker actuator are both
needed for a public address system or bullhorn. A camera sensor transmits a
signal to a CRT actuator, converting visible light to a signal then back to
visible light.
Since most
modern devices, even very simple ones, are likely to contain a number of
transducers it is important to use efficient ones. An inefficient transducer
makes an inefficient device and a series of inefficient components multiplies
inefficiency geometrically. Typically, a given type of component has a limit to
how efficient it can be.
Going back
to the example of the light bulb, incandescent bulbs are fundamentally
inefficient converters thus the current movements to find more efficient
transducers such as fluorescent or LCD bulbs to generate visible light. Devices
that incorporate inefficient components may benefit from a redesign that
replaces low efficiency elements with high efficiency alternatives.
Selecting Global Mobile Phone
- By Daniel Stouffer
- Published 09/2/2009
- Technology
plans offer 5G wireless technology that works globally.
They operate on the Global System for Mobile Communications
(GSM), which is the most common standard for mobile phones
around the world. It enables mobile phone calls to just
about anywhere in the world. For the best value in global
mobile phones, look for a service that utilizes digital GSM.
This makes the mobile phone a unique creation as it could
also be used as a digital camera or a video recorder. They
are used for various purposes for taking photos and also
for video recordings. This enables them to be the latest
and the trendy phones.
Buying cell phones are a difficult task as the price of the
cell phones differ each day and thus making trouble for the
customer. Global mobile phones seem to be popping up
everywhere. That's great but be sure to select an
international calling plan that supports inter-country
calling. It could be bought directly or through websites.
There are a lot of websites which are open nowadays for
shopping cell phones which is made easy by just clicking it
away. This is considered to be an easy step in buying cell
phones by sitting at home. Buying a global mobile phone is
a strategic decision. Think of the ability to call someone
from Japan and connect with your business partner in
Germany. This type of international calling with no roaming
charges and no swapping in and out of SIM cards could be
really helpful.
In many of the websites for shopping the delivery is free
of cost and in some there are taxes and shipping charges
which should be given along with the payment. Oh, the
Internet. Buying cell phones that work globally is not a
huge chore any longer. You can research online and at the
click of a button have the latest 5G technology powering a
global mobile phone delivered right to your door.
Research, research, and more research. Unfortunately, it is
the way shopping is done now-a-days. It is better to look
around and gather your details before getting stuck in a 3
year contract at #250 a month. Repeat the procedure with
other shops also. Thus you get complete information of the
cell phone which is available at different prices. The same
phone will be having different prices at different shops
and you get to know about the discounts present at various
shops.
Buying cell phones has to be thought for and should
initiate certain steps that help you to buy the very best.
For this the most important thing is to have a complete
information about the different cell phone rates and then
categorize them into your selections and likings and then
ponder over various factors that are needed by you and also
the newest techniques that might be of real use for you in
the future.
Such categorizing will enable you to buy the best cell
phones ever. Doing your homework whenever you buy something
is just a good idea. Researching a new global mobile phone
is no different. Don't be fooled or tricked into a new cell
phone that will not meet your needs.
Sony Ericsson IDOU Reviews
- By Sam Lee
- Published 09/2/2009

it was announced in Feb 2009. At the time of the
announcement Sony had predicted the launch of this phone in
the 2nd half of 2009; however, rumors suggest that it may
be on sale in Oct or Nov 2009. During a recent visit to a
press conference we got an opportunity to get a feel of
this phone. IDOU is just a prototype name for this model
which is still unnamed. 'Idou' in Japanese means 'a change'
and looks like this phone is going to change the way we
look at phones.
This phone comes with a 12 megapixel camera that is powered
by autofocus, a Xenon flash, LED flash for video recording,
Smile Shutter technology (it only captures an image when a
person is smiling, how cool is that!), geo-tagging and face
detection. It also has all the advanced features such as
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, microSD memory slot, USB 2.0
connectivity, touchscreen, HSDPA and an accelerometer, this
means that the phone detects the angle in which it's being
held and can change the screen to portrait or landscape
view. Sony Ericsson IDOU has a 3.5 inch touch screen that
occupies a large part of the phone. The touchscreen is very
responsive and easy to use. You can use the touchscreen
function on the display to access the camera and phonebook
via shortcuts; in addition, there are touch music player
controls on the display. You can also access the main menu;
the video player, messages, and the search option, there
are dedicated keys for each of these at the bottom of the
display.
On the right side of the phone are the volume rocker, media
player controls and a camera shutter. The left has a
headset jack/charger port. It's disappointing that the
phone has only one jack and Sony doesn't provide another
jack for the headphone. On the top of the display there is
a secondary camera which has been designed for video calls.
It is well placed and aided with a light sensor with
detects ambience lighting; this enables the camera to
adjust the brightness of the screen display depending on
the environment' s lighting condition.
As the IDOU has not been officially released, we are unable
to review it completely. If the software remains stable the
IDUO will definitely be a phone to have. At the moment Sony
is enjoying the anticipation in the market and is
heightening it by keeping mum. It hopes to be able to
reveal all soon including the official name of the IDOU
phone.
How To Use Technology To Power Charitable Donations
- By Christine OKelly
- Published 08/25/2009

Software for
fundraising has evolved along with the internet to allow charities to reach
donors much more easily and to facilitate the donation process. In addition to
the traditional methods, online fundraising increases a charity’s exposure and
earning power into new demographics as a cost-effective business model.
Software for fundraising
empowers a charitable organization to accept payments online via credit cards
first and foremost; but there are many more tools to improve donations. For
example, donor management software and integration with customer relations
management (CRM) software allows an organization to do more than just accept
payments, it allows a closer relationship between donor and charity. With the
rise of social networking through the internet, software for fundraising can
now tap into viral marketing and social networks to better expose a charity’s
cause and truly build a community.
Payment Options Beyond Simple Donations
The cornerstone of
online fundraising is to accept payments online via credit cards and PayPal.
Yet, there is a vast untapped potential if a charitable organization is only
utilizing their online resources in such a manner. Software for fundraising, at
the basic level, should allow for recurring payments, integration of tax
documentation, and accounting transparency.
Going outside the
box, other options include offering merchandise and premium content in exchange
for donations. Returning a tangible product or service not only attracts
donors, it also perpetuates a charity’s message above and beyond a single
donator. Effective systems will account for sales tax, shipping arrangements,
and bulk discounts for an easy plug-and-play arrangement to supplement any
charity
Customer Relationship Management
A charity should be
more than just a vehicle to accept donations and dispense needed services.
Building a relationship between donors and a charity is as important as the
relationship between the organization and the recipients. Software for
fundraising should provide marketing tools to manage campaigns to reach and
connect with donors and supply the required financial analysis to determine a
return on investment for these campaigns.
Being able to better
connect with and manage each donor really gives a charity a personal face to
put forward. Outreach and sales tools should be able to pinpoint leads that
will be truly interested in getting involved with a given organization. Keeping
an entire online fundraising team on message will enable a unified effort to
spread an organization’s cause and good works. Finally, effective software for
fundraising will pull this all together with forecasting tools to keep everyone
accountable and on goal.
Building Social Communities
A key aspect of online fundraising is social networking.
The internet provides limitless avenues to build communities across physical
boundaries and national borders. Maintaining a presence on the internet with an
interactive, informative website will attract a steady stream of attention.
Disseminating news through an online medium will keep your cause in the minds
of donors and potential donors. These networking tools will also spawn
secondary contacts as by their very nature they move on their own accord
through donors.
Ultimately, effective
software for fundraising should focus on making payments easier, providing more
options for giving, and better promoting a sense of community between donors,
charities, and recipients.
How To Use GPS to Track a Cell Phone
- By B Hopkins
- Published 08/21/2009

our privacy. One of these ways is our ability to get
"lost" in the world. Not lost as in you have no idea where
the heck you are (although in the metaphysical sense who
really knows where they are), but lost as in being able to
disappear into the fabric of society. Today, almost
everyone in the country has a cell phone, and with GPS so
commonly available in cell phones, it is almost too easy
to track someone's movements and whereabouts.
Almost all new cell phones manufactured today have built in
GPS functionality. The GPS feature works automatically
whenever the cell phone is turned on. Most people have
their cellular phones turned on all the time so they can
receive calls so as a result, the cell phone will also have
it's GPS turned on as well. Even if the user only turns on
their cell phone for a few minutes at a time to make calls,
someone who has already set up that cell phone number to
track, will be able to get their whereabouts during that
time the phone is on.
So how can you track someone?
A GPS locator service allows you to physically locate any
GPS enabled cell phone that has been verified, which
requires you to have it in your physical possession at
least once. Once you have subscribed to that service, you
can log in and track their movements as they go about town.
Tracking them in this way is very similar to taking a GPS
tracking device, and installing it clandestinely in
someone's car. The cell phone approach is less obvious
because most people won't think of it as a device they can
be tracked with. You can actually give the person you want
to track a new phone, and most of the time, they won't be
the wiser that their movements are being tracked. The cell
phone can also be planted in their vehicle without their
knowledge, just like a GPS tracking device. If you know
how to connect the cell phone to the car battery, you don't
have to remove it from the vehicle every 2 or 3 days to
recharge it.
This raises huge privacy issues, and in some locations may
be illegal to do this, however it is currently difficult to
regulate this kind of activity. Many ex-husbands have been
caught tracking their ex-wives using this technique and as
a result, has raised many safety concerns. Most people are
not technologically savvy and would have a difficult time
knowing where to look for a hidden cell phone in their
vehicle. One woman became suspicious because her
ex-husband always knew her whereabouts and had her car
searched, where they did find a hidden GPS enabled cell
phone attached to her car.
It is very easy to track someone with a cell phone. Most
mobile phone companies will soon begin to offer these
tracking services as an add-on to their service plan. For
those that don't yet have it, you can use third party
locator services to use GPS to track cell phone. There are
a few third party services out there that may have the
features most trackers, both innocent and clandestine, are
looking for.
My Samsung Impression Review
- By Sam Lee

market, the Samsung Impression may be the phone you are
looking for with its heart throbbing features and
attractive (and should we also say gorgeous) outlook. With
its large vibrant touch screen and full physical slide out
QWERTY keyboard, this phone is pretty much geared up!
The most impressive fact about this phone is the AMOLED,
(Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode), technology
that's making its debut in the United States. For all those
potential customers out there, this translates into the
brightest and finest colored display you've ever seen on a
phone before. You'll be surprised at how clearly you can
see the screen in any setting including the sunny outdoors.
The vibrant colors and the outstandingly clear details make
the display of the Impression, its biggest USP.
Viewing your photos or videos on the 3.2" inch wide touch
screen which supports up to 262,000 colours and a
resolution of 240 x 400 pixels, is nothing short of being
an enjoyment. What's more, the addition of unique features
like a proximity sensor that gets the display to turn off
when it's brought close to the face and the lesser power
consumed by the display shows the consideration and the
quality that went into the creation of this slick and
smooth mobile phone.
The Impression is styled to appear like a candy bar with a
full QWERTY keyboard that can be accessed by tipping the
phone on its side and sliding it up. Samsung has done a
good job with the QWERTY keyboard, making the keys spaced
out sufficiently for users to type with improved
convenience and ease. If that's not to your liking, you
also have the option to use the touchscreen keyboard which
offers both T9 and QWERTY.
Other noteworthy features would be the intuitive TouchWiz
interface, the 3.0 MP camera and GPS. AT&T Impressions use
a MEdiaNet browser and a 3g connection which are
impressively fast. It takes around thirty seconds to load
pages. The browser can display in both portrait and
landscape modes, also allowing users to easily switch
between the touch keyboard and the slide out QWERTY
keyboard.
The 3.0 megapixel camera allows you to take good pictures
that appear even better on the large and vivid display and
you have an array of photo editing and enhancing features
as well that are easy to use and only require a couple of
clicks to accomplish.
Call reception and voice quality is above par on this
phone. The speaker phone facility was good enough to make
myself heard and to hear the other person as well even when
using it on the road and the advertised battery life of 250
hours proved an accurate estimate.
Touch Screen Phone Review - LG Cookie

inexpensive range. Without a doubt, this phone has proven
itself as a popular buy with its touch screen capability
and wide array of functionalities - of which we would like
to mention - 3 inch full touch sensitive screen, intuitive
user interface, motion sensor, handwriting recognition, and
a 3.0 mega-pixel camera.
First Impressions: the entire presentation is unfussy and
exudes a sense of undemanding usability — an issue
that many expensive touchscreens with a plethora of
functional options have not been able to offer. However, to
make it both sturdy and cheaper, the touchscreen is based
on the resistive technology which means that glass is not
used, making the screen a bit compromised in terms of
intuitiveness. However, the pressure that has to be applied
to move around the icons on the screen isn't too demanding
and once you get used to it, the entire process should not
be uncomfortable, as the screen is responsive. Unlike many
other touch screen cell phone, the LG Cookie has 3 physical
buttons located below the display for quick one-touch
functions.
Exploring Further: there are some smart conceptual elements
in the KP500, like the home screen display widgets that can
be easily moved around and then placed exactly where
wanted. Widgets would include the all important calender,
organizer, standard clock and shortcuts to other functions
which the user may customize accordingly. Further, an
interesting flicking option is provided, i.e. upon flicking
left/right you gain access to the home page's list of the
recorded contacts in an easy-to-call thumbnail format. This
is a smart way of reducing the dependability on the
touchscreen operations and inducing something new. There is
a standard keypad on view but it does offer the option of
typing by using the predictive text option or the QWERTY
keypad. Something that was not expected in the LG Cookie
— hand-writing recognition that isn't just a gimmick
but actually works very well but it takes time to use it as
the entire process is a bit tedious. It has the standard
TransFlash micro-SD that supports up to 16 GB of memory.
Bluetooth v2.1 is offered along with A2DP and it supports
WAP 2.0, xHTML and HTML browsers.
Conclusion: LG Cookie does not pit itself against the
iPhone. Instead, it offers itself as an alternative touch
screen phone for users who want one without paying much of
a premium. It should be recognized that the LG Cookie is
not meant for comparison with the high end touch screen
cell phones currently on the market. In light of this, this
phone has done well in terms of functionality. With
features such as photo viewer and a motion sensor, the LG
Cookie tries to create a niche for itself in the market as
a low-priced but high-performance touchscreen option and to
a large extent, it does succeed in this attempt.
Are Cell Phone No Contract Plans Advantageous?

contract option. We all know that the electronics market is highly volatile,
with constant innovations in technology, the arrival of new brands,
new options and even changes in network coverage and availability.
If you lock yourself into a contract, you could be sorry very shortly
thereafter!
On top of that, you can change your phone, network, carrier
or even your plan at short notice and another prime benefit
in choosing a cell phone no contract plan is that you
really do not have to project any figures about your
potential usage for many years ahead.
When you actually sign up for a contract, you have to look
into a crystal ball and predict the future to see how
useful the terms will be for you tomorrow. In two years or
even a year from now, your monthly fixed charge may not be
suitable at all.
If you had had some problems in the past and have poor
credit, or even have no credit due to your age, by choosing
a cell phone no contract plan you won't have to undergo a
credit check. On top of everything, if you have one of
these plans, you do not have to establish a security
deposit.
There are basically two types of cell phone no contract
plan available - the "pay as you go" plan and the prepaid
plan. If you opt for a prepaid plan, you will pay for your
monthly usage before you start. This gives you the
advantage of being able to change your needs in a month's
time.
This kind of plan offers considerable flexibility and can
be a great solution for you if you're on a budget or in a
transitional phase of your life. A starter phone is
included within this plan and a number of additional
benefits could also be available.
If you choose to "pay as you go", then you will not need to
pay anything in advance and will not require a credit card
for payment. Phone cards are easily available in
convenience stores, shopping malls or gas stations and you
simply need to purchase a certain amount each month to keep
the account active. Other than that, there are no
commitments, no contracts, no credit card requirements, no
credit checks and no deposits.
As competition continues to grow in the marketplace,
consumers are faced with tons of option related to no
contract cell phone plans, pay as you go and low cost.
Competition will force the traditional carriers to offer
additional flexibility to the end-user.
Cell phone no contract plans will become more widely
available as the carriers understand that the consumer
needs and will demand choice and freedom.
Texting and Emailing: What Not To Do
- By Cindy A Christiansen
- Published 08/14/2009

but I recently found myself in a whole lot of trouble.
Let's talk about communication. It's a process of
exchanging information to share knowledge, express
feelings, state our positions, or share our skills.
However, communication is more than words. It's made up of
verbal (words) and nonverbal (gestures, expressions, etc.)
messages.
Researchers in communication suggest that only 7% of a
message is sent through words and the rest is all nonverbal
expressions. A lot of the time it is what the person is not
saying, their inflection, their gestures, their expression,
their tone, and most importantly& #8212;your gut reaction to
what they've said—which speaks louder than words.
With texting and emailing you only get the written word
which definitely has its limitations, especially if you do
not know the person well. (That was my faux pas.)
When you type your communication, it is difficult to
express your feelings and intentions. Some emails have
added emoticons, but watching a little smiley-face jump up
and down is not quite the same thing. If someone sends you
a smiley-face, what is their true emotion? Are they
serious, lying, depressed, or being sarcastic?
When communicating with family and friends, you already
know their intentions and feelings toward you. If they
accidentally type something that sounds a little odd, you
assume the best. That doesn't always happen with
acquaintances. With emails and texting, we don't get the
chance to stop the person and ask, "What was that you
said?"?" All we see are those glaring words on the screen
that we are enraged about and quickly respond to without
thinking it through. People rarely text back and ask, "What
did you mean?" or "Could you explain?"
For some reason with the written word, what you type is
fact and not to be questioned. If someone typed it, they
meant it. But how often in verbal communication does
something come out wrong? In that case, we get the chance
to quickly say, "I didn't mean that the way it sounded."
Unfortunately, once the message is sent - it's sent. And
unfortunately, it might be sent to more people than you had
planned. (Another one of my faux pas.)
The current estimate is that more than ten million texts
and emails are sent each second and is rapidly replacing
all other forms of communication. Sad to think about when
you realize the importance of non-verbal communication. It
could explain why the number of internet scams are
increasing by exponential numbers. In 2007, The Internet
Crime Complaint Center reported these statistics:
o Online auction fraud was the most reported type of fraud
and accounted for 44.9% of consumers complaints
o Non-delivered merchandise and/or payment made up 19% of
complaints
o Check fraud represented 4.9% of complaints
o About 70% of the fraud victims were scammed through the
web
o About 30% of the victims were scammed by emails
Of course I'm not saying that you can't be duped in person,
but if someone shows up as my new financial advisor in an
unmarked white truck, wearing a red bandana and white
T-shirt, with tattoos and nervous flashy eyes, I'm probably
not going to do business with him...let alone let him in
the house.
As I was growing up, my mother used to recite this quote:
"Keep your words soft and sweet, You'll never know
from time-to-time, Which ones you'll have to eat."
Those words prove even more important today with the number
of words being sent by text and email. And you cannot
always be prepared for the way those innocent words will be
interpreted without your sweet voice and naïve nature
for them to judge you by.
Written communication used to be an art form in which
people took the time to think out. Now it is often a
hurried, thoughtless response. I have sent a number of
emails giving information and the immediate, clueless
responses amaze me. It is like the person didn't take the
time to actually read what I wrote, in some cases they've
come to the wrong conclusion and fired back a thoughtless
email. (Their faux pas.)
To sum up, here are a few things to remember when texting
or emailing:
1. Read each email or text slowly to make sure you
understand the meaning.
2. Think about your response before firing one back,
especially if you are angry.
3. Re-read your response for any errors. Spell checkers
won't always catch wording mistakes.
4. Check and make sure that who you are sending it to is
accurate.
5. Make sure that any sarcastic messages won't be
misinterpreted.
6. If you receive a text or email that offends you, take
the time to question the sender first before responding to
his/her statement.
7. Don't text or email while driving or distracted.
No, I am not going to tell you what actually happened with
my faux pas. I'll keep that between me and the thousands of
contacts that received my poorly-worded, emoticon-free
email. Hopefully, this is one communication I got right.
Tips for Cutting Business Utility Costs with KWH Meters
- By Christine OKelly
- Published 08/7/2009
- Technology
Now more
than ever, businesses are looking for creative ways to save money and raise
profits. And in today's economy, utility bills are among of the highest
expenses the average business shoulders. Organizations use KWH meters to
monitor energy use in order to share the cost with other entities or to find
areas of energy waste.
Home Business Deductions
Taxpayers
operating home businesses can deduct utilities from their annual taxes. The
amount that can be deducted is proportional to the size of the office. A 200
square foot office in a 2,000 square foot home would allow 10% of annual
utility bills to be deducted on the owner's income tax. However there are many
cases where the office uses a disproportionate amount of power.
A west
facing home office might require a portable air conditioner to keep it
comfortable during hot afternoons. Copiers, fax machines and other equipment
means more electrical equipment is in the office than anywhere else in the
house, raising electrical use. Home businesses such as laser engraving or
carpentry may use equipment with very high energy demands.
A KWH meter
allows the business owner to document the power used by the home office and
deduct the actual amount used rather than a percentage of the total.
Passing Energy Costs to Tenants
Any time an
office landlord is sharing energy costs among tenants, the problem of dividing
up utility bills arises. The situation could be a homeowner renting out a spare
room or a building with hundreds of commercial offices. In the past, individual
KWH meters were expensive and difficult to install so owners used strategies
such as adjusting rental fees to cover utilities or dividing up total energy
costs by square footage.
The problem
with these policies is they give no incentive to conserve. An energy-gobbling
tenant pays the same as the one who struggles to reduce power consumption.
Modern KWH meters are inexpensive and simple to use. Utility bills can be
calculated for each tenant, allowing fair pricing and encouraging individual
responsibility for energy use.
Conservation on an Industrial Scale
KWH meters
aren't meant just for computers and other small electronics. Large
manufacturing operations use far more energy than standard office environments
and find that conservation leads to significant cost reductions.
KWH meters
allow a manufacturing facility to determine what operations are using the
greatest amount of power. Attention can be directed at the most energy-hungry
processes since small changes there will have the largest impact on energy
consumption. Plants with multiple divisions can monitor each division
separately, leaving it to managers to find ways to cut power consumption to
lower levels.
As changes
are made, the meters demonstrate whether they are having an effect or not. When
employees and managers see tangible proof of their efforts, they are motivated
to conserve more. Departments can be rewarded for conservation efforts, saving
money and improving morale.
