Most planners understand the importance of keynote speakers at conferences and other functions. Finding the right speaker can be a struggle, but planners can to make the search easier.
Don't Wait: You should get started on your search well in advance of the event. The process is time consuming. The best speakers are in high demand and the earlier a speaker is contacted the more likely she can accommodate your request.
Know Your Goals: Knowing your event is an annual stockholder's meeting isn't enough. You've got to meet with the executives and find out what they wish to accomplish at the meeting. This makes it so much smoother to find the right speaker.
Write Down Your Goals: Talk is cheap. Keeping a written list forces executives and planners alike to work out all the details of your event.
Viewing Video Reference: Most often, keynote speakers have video documentation of their work. Look for video of a live performance, not just the speaker talking to a camera from a script. Pay attention to how the speaker interacts with the attendees, how comfortable she is on the platform and how relevant her material is to your event.
Every Event Has Different Needs: Most motivational speakers tend to be specialized. Just because a speaker is great with kids, doesn't mean they are the right fit for your corporate event. No one is great at everything, so avoid speakers who claim to do it all.
Ask Questions: If you're not sold on a particular speaker, ask for more information. Questions are good. Motivational speakers use marketing materials that are phrased in general terms to appeal to a wide variety of clients. Talk to a potential presenter about your event and ask her what she can bring to the table.
Flexibility Is Key: A good presenter won't try to force a preplanned presentation on you. Many speakers use a framework of standard scripts as a starting point to build an original script. Look for someone who will make a unique speech to your event and your message rather than a generic talk that won't make a strong impression.
It can take a lot of effort to find the best fit. You greatly increase the success rate for your event when you find the right speaker.
