If you have been considering the purchase of exercise videos, you may want to get started. Canadian Neuroscientist Dr. Brian Christie was responsible for the initial discovery of the connection between the brain and exercise. The University of Victoria researcher found that a good fitness system and routine actually causes your body to increase brain cell production. Previously, experts believed that the brain's ability to produce neurons slowed and eventually stop as we age.

Study Findings

Two groups of mice were the basis for much of Christie's research. He gave two groups of mice with identical genetics identical diets and water. However, one group was given a running wheel on which they ran five kilometers ever night. After six week, the mice who had exercised found a hidden platform faster and easier than the ones who did not. To confirm this belief, Christie examined their brains to find that the mice who had been more active had produced far more neurons than those who did not, enabling the brain to transmit impulses faster and more accurately.

Dr. Brian Christie's research isn't the only study to prove this theory. Recently, University of Kansas' Dr. Jeffrey Burns performed studies on a group of Alzheimer' patients. He found those who were physically fit only suffered one quarter of the brain shrinkage of those who were not. Both researchers believe the real link between brain cell growth and exercise is the increased amount of blood and oxygen to the brain.

The Meaning Of This Study

While exercise videos will never be the cure for brain damage or mental conditions, using a fitness system still has its advantages. Experts have found that the progress of mental diseases and issues slowed significantly in people who do suffer from various mental conditions. They also believe that exercise videos, walking, running, and other forms of exercise can delay the appearance of these conditions.

Perhaps more importantly, this groundbreaking information could possibly lead to a real treatment or cure for the problems that a large percentage of the population suffers from, including schizophrenia and depression. What scientists hope to find is a method of replicating this response to actually speed up the process.

Adding Physical Activity Into Your Lifestyle

Exercise videos are a convenient and fun way to increase the amount of exercise in your daily routine. You can use dance moves like those found in fitness systems such as 'Hip Hop Abs', enjoy relaxing mind and soul styles like Yoga, or combination fitness systems like 'P90X' and 'Ten Minute Trainer'. Walking, running, biking, hiking, and many other activities are just as effective. The most important thing is that you enjoy it, and design a schedule that gives you a variety of styles and types.

While they are not the miracle cure, exercise videos, sports activities, and even daily chores can benefit your health inside and out. The difficulty for most people is getting started. Once you do start, however, the benefits show up quickly, so what are you waiting for?
