Russia’s Natural Gas Monopoly

U.S. based natural gas companies such as Triple Diamond Energy Corp. realize the vast amounts of oil in the United States. But even our plentiful amount of oil is dwarfed in comparison to the oil reserves in Russia.

Russia is the home of the world’s largest proven natural gas reserves.  Russia currently possesses 1,689 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.  That amount is nearly double the amount currently owned by Iran – the world’s second largest natural gas supply. The resources that could be making Russia extremely powerful and wealthy have been extremely mismanaged since the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.

Gazprom: Russia’s Natural Gas Monopoly

Russia set up a gas monopoly known as Gazprom to manage the distribution the country’s gas supply and oversee the exploration needed to find new reserves.  Unfortunately, this state owned monopoly has been unable to properly manage the countries large supplies of natural gas.

Many believe that Russia should reconsider the way Gazprom is currently handling the country’s most precious resource.  At this time, there are literally tons of untapped natural gas reserves in Russia that could be netting the country billions of dollars through exporting and domestic use.

Refusing Foreign Help or Consultation

In an effort to maintain a complete monopoly on all natural resources, Russia has not allowed any foreign companies to come into the country to drill, explore, or even offer advice.

Other countries have long since realized the benefits of allowing foreigners into their territory to consult or drill.  The country that official owns the land and resources can charge foreign and outside teams fees for drilling and they can even demand a percentage of profits if resources or discovered.  In addition to monetary gain, companies can receive a lot in the form of knowledge by allowing foreign companies in.

By learning from experts, domestic companies a chance to discover different techniques and talk to different geologists and engineers in order to learn innovations that they can use.  Meanwhile, Russia has adopted the stance that if they cannot utilize their natural resources first then no one else can.

The Repercussions of a Natural Gas Monopoly

This stance and Gazprom have severely impacted the supplies currently being produced.  In a country that should rich in natural resources and natural gas, they are actually experiencing shortages.  Mismanagement of the pipelines that should be distributing gas to Russia’s population has led to problems with heating and fueling because many people are unable to receive the gas that is highly abundant in their own country.

Triple Diamond Energy Corp. understands the potential dangers of a monopoly in the oil and gas industry. Along with other U.S. based oil and natural gas companies, Triple Diamond Energy Corp. is helping America become less dependent on foreign oil so that the United States can become more energy independent.
