File Recovery the First Time

File recovery costs vary. So do the solutions. Let's take a
in depth look at them and give you some pointers along the
way that will help you get everything recovered.

To start with, you may be wondering why the cost for file
recovery products can range from about thirty-five to
hundreds of dollars. And then there's the service
differences. Answering all the questions you're thinking
about, and helping you find the right software or service
is important, but first let us make certain your data is
safe.

Think Safety Before Recovery:

If you're reviewing this information on the computer you
want to perform file recovery on, do the following right
now. The reason being is the O/S on your computer is
usually functioning behind the scenes with the possibility
of destroying your data permanently.

- Close down any open documents.

- Print this article to read offline.

- Instead of turning off the computer, unplug it right
away. FYI: The reason it's so important to unplug the
computer instead of shutting it off, is to keep it from
running any longer. Shutting down your computer in the
traditional way may cause data to be lost without recourse.

What To Avoid:

Stay far away from the manufacturer' s system recovery disk.
This software makes matters worse because it can
permanently overwrite your files. Heed this warning - this
is not a file recovery program. Simply call up the maker
and ask them if your data will be overwritten upon running
the program. They will always reply, "Yes".

Never install file recovery software on the same computer
you're trying to get files back from; It could overwrite
your lost files.

Attention computer technicians: even if you are trying to
recover a particular partition, and already have a separate
partition to install the file recovery software on, do not
do it. Since the file system could be corrupt, you could
end up overwriting the partition and the files while doing
it. Don't take chances. You're better off installing the
program onto a secondary drive.

File Recovery Utilities:

Depending upon what happened, will determine which file
recovery product you have to use...

- Did you accidentally delete a file you need back?

- Did you lose a file, or when you found it, discovered it
was damaged?

- As you started your computer, did a blue or black screen
appear with an error? Make a note of the problem.

Deleted files are easy to get back with file undelete
software, which also happens to be the least expensive
solution. If you still can't find your file, the file
system was probably altered. That means you have to
download stronger and more expensive program that can do
the job.

To save you time in looking for such a software, look for a
one that's above the sixty-dollar mark and below a hundred
and twenty-five. If you're a computer technician you may
want to get a recovery toolkit that costs a few hundred.

If one of the stronger softwares don't work, or if you
couldn't access your computer from the start, it's time to
contact a file recovery company.

Professional File Recovery:

When you're looking for a file recovery service, make sure
they both make and offer file recovery software. If so they
should have good to great services. After a decade and a
half in the business, this is a reliable pattern.

A real recovery company will only handle file recovery and
sometimes criminal cases involving computer forensics.
You'll know if they really are a professional service or a
general computer technician, by simply asking something
like, Can you install a reliable backup system in my office?

The Best Suggestion I Can Give You:

The expression goes, it's not a matter of when you will
need file recovery, but when it occurs, are you going to
prepared. Preventing the inevitable file recovery problem
is the best thing you can do. Protect your files in the
future and avoid the recovery process again with the
following tips:

- Make sure to perform daily file backups daily.

- Check monthly to make sure your back-up works because a
problem occurs at least once or twice a year.

- Make sure your computer is set to defrag weekly. It not
only helps optimize your computer but also helps with file
recovery.
